It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Judith Sussman on Sunday, August 21, 2022. Judith was preceded in death by her beloved husband Arthur in 2008. Judith is survived by daughters Hannah Sussman and Rachel McLeod; granddaughters Masha Brumer, Esmé Brumer, Katie McLeod, Elizabeth McLeod, and Naomi McLeod. She was preceded in death by her brother Dr. Fred Witkoff, her mother Jesse Witkoff, and father Maurice Witkoff.
In keeping with Judith’s wishes, in lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Congregation Albert.
Zichrona Livracha, may Judith’s memory be for a blessing.
"Arthur loved the Old Book: the stories; the morality; the squabbles; they all resonated in him. He struggled with his own condition. He argued with God and everybody else who’d care to engage.
"Bear in mind that Arthur loved these Bible stories for their timeless emotional messages and intellectual challenges."
- Judith M. Sussman
"Besides painting the Bible, I always went out into the remote areas
(of New Mexico) and did landscapes. Sooner or later it became almost impossible, for me, to do a landscape without a person in it. I like to relate humanity to what I do. Who was the most obvious person to put in? Well, a Native American, somebody with whom the landscape had not only an environmental meaning but a religious meaning. They blended. They worked.
And I was able to express a kind of similarity of mysticism - a spirituality into this character whom I based on the readings I’ve done. Whose name is Blue Feather. He is one of the nomadic tribes. Blue
Feather then became the focus of landscapes, landscape concepts, with a riding figure or a figure at repose on a horse. The more Investigation I did on Indian life, the more I was sure that this was, for me, the southwestern equivalent of my biblical work."
- Arthur Sussman (during
an interview for Colores on KMNE-TV)
